REMEMBERING ALICE SELETSKY

Alice Seletsky died Wednesday, November 11th. Some of you knew her. Many of you did not. She was a memorable teacher of children and of adults. Alice was a founding teacher at Central Park East 1 in New York, where she worked with fifth and sixth graders - "the big kids" she called them - and later, with beginning readers. She taught at Brooklyn College, she supplied many of us with book titles, and she studied ancient Greek. And she loved Jane Austen.

Alice's long association with Prospect started during the summer of 1974 or 1975 when she was part of a group of teachers, administrators, and researchers who began to plan what was to become Inquiry Into Meaning, a study of children learning to read. From then through the 1990s Alice participated in summer institutes, where she made major contributions to Prospect's thought and works (and humor.) She worked on the development of the Reference Edition of the Prospect Archives, and was a member of Prospect's Board of Trustees for many years.

We invite you to write your remembrance of Alice and to post it in comments to this entry. We will collect these and give them to Alice's family.

I remember meeting Alice for the first time. This was in the late 1980's. Alice came to a conference for New Hampshire educators held on the Dartmouth campus. She was with Jessica Howard, long time teacher at the Prospect School. Both Alice and Jessica were at this conference on a mission with two purposes: (1) getting the word out about the Prospect School and the work of Prospect (always a good thing), (2) literally trying to save the Prospect School as grant funding had dried up and people needed to earn money for the school. As a part of their presentation, Alice met in the evening with people who had been inspired by the slide show of the school presented during a day session. The setting of this meeting was most peculiar. It was held in a formal dormitory living room area that had only a couch in the corner and a finely upholstered high-backed chair in the middle of the room. As I entered the room, I saw Alice in the chair, gesturing as she spoke. A crowd of teachers, young and old, surrounded her. People sat at her feet, leaned in from the side, some squeezed forward (I was one of them) to hear. When I really got to know Alice, at Summer Institutes, I realized what an odd scene it had been. Not what Alice had been saying, but the sense that she was "holding court." Alice, who was one of the least pretentious people I have ever known, one of the most down-to-earth, seated on high and surrounded by all of these eager learners. As many of us know, sitting alongside the learners would have been more typical of Alice. It was a special moment, though. For me. Out of it came the opportunity to sit next to Alice the following summer, to hear her careful, considered, brilliant thoughts; and to learn that she would give whatever I had to offer her full attention.

Both Alice and Harold were people I was so glad to have met and shared time. They both ushered me into their lives with humor, intelligence and patience. Alice had the most contagious laugh. I met her at CPE I years ago, and she displayed such loving and engaged craft that I knew I wanted to be a teacher like her. I haven't seen either Alice or Harold in years, but I have thought of them both often. I wish the family solace and succor with each wonderful memory of this grand lady.

Is it worth it to submit to a new web directory with PR 0? Yes. It would not hurt the search engine rankings of your site, but if done in the right manner. Submission of your web portal in a wrong manner even in case of a PR 5 web directory may hurt your link profile. Such web directories shall help you to gain more and more inbound links every week. Obviously, PR of most of the successful directories would rise with time, so do not worry much about it, you simply think that you are having One-Way backlinks for your portal totally free, without paying an extra dime.
