Philadelphia Teachers' Learning Cooperative
TLC has been meeting every Thursday since 1978. We originally started when funding for The Advisory Center, a teachers' center, was withdrawn by the School DIstrict of Philadelphia. A group of teachers had been discussing educational issues over dinner at the Center on Thursdays after we finished making curriculum materials or attending workshops after school. We found those discussions valuable to our practice, and we wanted to continue to meet. We did not want to have to worry about funding. Many of the founding members had attended seminars with Patricia Carini, Corinne Bigss, Jessica Howard, and other staff at the Prospect School, and we decided to focus our meetings on children and classrooms, using the Descriptive Review processes developed at Prospect.
Our meetings are usually held in participants' homes. Every meeting is open to anyone who wishes to come. Before meetings, we engage in informal discussion and enjoy refreshments provided by the host. The meeting itself is quite formal. Participants take turns presenting and chairing. We hold a planning meeting every six weeks to figure out each week's focus and then send out the schedule which includes topics, presenters, chairs, and addresses for the meetings. We welcome visitors at our meetings.
